Barekasi Rainforest Lodge official opened
On the 11th of November representatives of the Dutch Millennium Foundation (DMF) and NRDF officially opened the eco-lodge in Barekasi Rainforest Reserve. DMF is one of the donors who provided financial assistance to build the visitors compound. Other assistance came from Rufford’s Small Grant Programme and Green Gold Forest products (GGFP). The compound which is situated at the border of the reserve consists of a two room dormitory for tourist and researchers and a staff house for cooks and guides. Although some work still needs to be done to improve the facility, the tourism committee thinks that the project can commence in January 2014. The Barekasi Rainforest Reserve (approx 1000 hectares) is the last remaining lowland rainforest on VellaLavella. The goal of the project is to protect this pristine forest ecosystem and to benefit the people of Leona village. The project committee hopes to welcome national and international visitors and researchers who would like to experience a community run rainforest adventure.
