Sustainable timber used in Gizo building project

A new stairway was built at the new Correctional Centre building site in Gizo using FSC™ certified timber produced by Green Gold Forest Products (GGFP) in Vella Lavella.  The stairway was built from certified Vitex and is the first building constructed from FSC™ certified timber in the Western Province. International building companies SKM & Reeves International, who are part of the RAMSI Solomon Islands Infrastructure Partnership (RSIIP), were committed to  source their timber supplies from well managed forests and signed the contract with NRDF partner GGFP to supply the 14.5 m3 of FSC™ certified timber. The extra financial benefits from the timber ordered were a tremendous help for the Leona community and will hopefully pave the road for more local building projects using FSC™ certified timbers.
