News from the field: Mary Zautu, Rarakisi Village, Choiseul

Mary is a single mother of 3 children, living in the village of Rarakisi, Choiseul Province. In 2013 she became a honey farmer under the NRDF honey programme. She is keeping one hive with her family and has since harvested 26 bottles (300ml) of honey which she sold at the local market. Leftovers from harvesting are always appreciated by her children who love the sweet taste of honey (photo: Mary (right) harvesting honey with NRDF honey officer Tony, October 2014).  Meanwhile Mary has also become the Chairperson of the local women saving club which was set up in June 2014 with the assistance of NRDF. The club has now 11 members (of which 5 are honey farmers) and club saving have reached more than SBD$ 2,000. Mary appreciates the small programmes NRDF brings to the village as it supports her and other women in their basic family needs.
