NRDF sawmill service launched during Boeboe workshop
From 24 to 28 October a forest management and FSC certification workshop was organized for members of the Boeboe community in Choiseul. At the same time NRDF launched its new saw milling services for FSC members that are part of NRDF’s group certification programme. The portable sawmill, which was purchases with financial support from Bread for the World, will be used to assist FSC members in their forest management activities and produce FSC timber for the Local and International markets. 15 community participants (of whom 5 females) joined the training which was separated into a 4 days theory and a 5 days practical part. The practical part was to teach members how to work safely around a portable sawmill and how to handle sawn timber to maintain the best timber quality. A total of 17.7 cubic metres of timber was produced in only 5 days. The timber will be used for a community hall that will be built on an island near Boeboe village. The people in Boeboe were very enthusiastic about the new service and expect to have many benefits from it.
