PES pilot project with Live & learn
As part of its climate change/REDD+ programme, NRDF has signed an agreement with Live & Learn to collaborate in developing two pilot projects in Choiseul Province. The project, which is funded by GIZ , aims to introduce activities that are part of the so-called Nakau programme. The Nakau Programme is a Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) programme focussing on community‐based forest protection and enhancement and sustainable development. The purpose of the Nakau Programme is to provide a financing mechanism to cover the costs of environmental management activities and addressing any landowner opportunity costs where relevant. Developed in Fiji and Vanuatu the programme seems to fit the circumstances and context of the Solomon Islands where forest destruction and unsustainable land-use continues to be a problem. Two areas have been selected to carry out the pilot project activities: Boeboe (Kamaboe tribal area, see photo) and Sasamunga (Sirebe tribal area), both are NRDF partner communities. The initial project phase is set for 6 months (June-December 2014).
