Study tour NRDF to Teak plantation & Agro forestry projects in Laos
From 14 to 24 February NRDF team leader Wilko Bosma travelled to Laos to visit several agro-forestry and forest plantation programmes. The main purpose of the visit was to gather as much information and get a clear insight in the small holders teak plantation programmes in Laos including activities such as FSC certification of small holders, value adding of Teak logs, mechanization in timber down processing & timber transport and agro-forestry systems implemented by private sector on customary owned land. The tour included visits to Burapah Agroforestry Co Ltd in Vientiane, the Luang Prabang Teak Programme (LPTP) and Luang Prabang Provincial Forestry Department. Meetings were held with key people and officers working within the different programmes. The study visit ended with a presentation at the Kasetsart University in Bangkok, organized by The Centre for People and Forest (RECOFTC) and PEFC. In this presentation the work of NRDF was explained and some of the outcomes of the Laos visit were discussed. The visit to Laos was highly successful and inspiring. NRDF’s next step is to start formulating a project concept (feasibility study) to implement some Teak/agro-forestry activities within the NRDF project areas, based on the learnings and outcomes from the visit to Laos.
