Succesful SFM workshop in Sasamunga (Choiseul)
From 2-6 December, a workshop was held in Sasamunga village (Choiseul) on sustainable forest management and FSC™ certification. The workshop was organized and facilitated by SPC (Secretariat of Pacific Communities) and NRDF. Representatives of six tribal communities in Choiseul (Chivoko, Sirebe, Gorabara, Rarakisi, Boeboe, Voza) joined the workshop to learn more about SFM, FSC™ certification and Forest conservation. Participants were also updated and introduced to issues like REDD+, honeybee farming (livelihoods) and some general “Pacific” development challenges. The workshop included a field day during which participants were trained in some practical forest inventory techniques and to visualize tree selection procedures and other forest management planning activities. As a result of this workshop three participating groups are now ready to sign a membership agreement with NRDF to become a FSC™ group member. After this successful workshop NRDF hopes to continue its collaboration with SPC in the years to come.
