Good progress in the Leona Reforestation program

Since October 2012, the reforestation program in the Barekasi area has been progressing very well.  Thanks to funding  by Dutch Provincial Government body,  Gemeente Hardenberg in the Netherlands, an additional  30 hectares of damaged forest has been replanted with 12, 000 small indigenous timber trees. In 2007, a logging company began to illegally clear forests in one of the NRDF’s Vella Lavella project areas. After chasing out the logging company, the community involved has now replanted 40ha of the felled area to help in the regeneration of the forest and try to reverse the compaction and creeper overgrowth that has occurred in other logged areas of the Solomon Islands.
